Exercise 3, Part 2
Scout a location, and describe the setting
- I'm a janitor at Kean University. Since I'm frequently cleaning out the gym, why not use that location? I come in just as everyone else is leaving, so I get to work, mostly, in peace and quiet. Even though everyone has already left, you wouldn't know it by the smell! It always smells horrible in here, but I guess that is what you have to expect in a lifting gym. The smell, combined with the amount of trash that is left around, is a big reason why I dislike this place. Yet, I need an income somehow, so I can't complain.
- Even though most of the time there is no one in the gym, occasionally I come here a little early to get a head start. You definitely can tell that there are different "types" of people that come here to work out.
- You have the guys that come everyday. It isn't hard to identify those people, you can tell because they are usually in much better shape than everyone else here. They clearly know what they're doing.
- Then, there are the people that don't know what they're doing. They don't know which exercises they should be doing, or how to do them correctly. I don't blame them, I'm not much for keeping in top physical shape, myself.
- You also have those people that only come to run upstairs in the cardio room. Usually when I get here early, I clean up that room before anywhere else, since you basically can't get in the way of someone running on a treadmill.
- Outside of my cleaning cart that I'm pushing around, I personally make a bunch of noise myself. Between the cart and cleaning out the garbages, I usually get a couple of glances my way. Yet, everyone else is making far more noise than I am. All the weird sounds these people make while they're working out is beyond me, I probably wouldn't even be able to replicate them. Between that, the radio, and people running upstairs, the gym is a very noisy place.
- When I get here early, there are usually around 20 or so people left here. Yet, when ten o'clock comes around and the students that work here want to leave, it's kind of funny to watch them kick all 20 of them out. Regardless of if they're done with their workout or not, the gym is closed. That's probably the biggest change I witness during my shift, but that is fine with me! It makes my job a lot easier when no one is around, so I welcome that change in scenery.
- Like I said before, there is never a pleasant sent in the gym, but thats where I come in! Before I go to work, it smells like a mixture of wet dog and someone that refuses to use deodorant. Since it usually smells so rotten, it makes my job so much more rewarding, though. I make sure I clean up well, and I do it fast. I don't want to take in those smells any more than the next guy, but I wouldn't mind the smell of Pine Sol after I'm done cleaning!

The Beatles: A Hard Day's Night
In the film, A Hard Day's Night, the audience is taken through an average day in the life of the legendary musicians of The Beatles. Throughout the entirety of the film, they are seen in their "natural habitats" of playing concerts, practicing their songs, and getting themselves into crazy shenanigans that famous celebrities get into on a daily basis. It was filmed in black and white, and according to the Desaturation Theory, it grabbed the attention of many people around the world.
During the film, the band was shot in almost fully in key light and hard light so the feel of the movie could make the audience know they are just normal people in normal settings. In comparison to their appearance on the cover of Life Magazine, they are all seen in Hard Lighting, and have a high contrast background to make them stand out, yet still look like an everyday person.
There are also parts during the film where the band is shot in cameo lighting, where parts of their faces are very lit up, and then the other side suffers from fast falloff. This is not how it is on the cover of Life Magazine because the photographer wanted to make sure they were distinguished and not possible to mix up with someone else.
Exercise 3 Part 1
1) The location I chose is the Nancy Thompson Library. There are many people doing work and on the computer, and some are drinking coffee from the Starbucks next door.
2) There are four individuals that stand out quite well. One of them is a older male, possibly a professor at Kean University. His bright red dress shirt makes him stand out as one of the more unique characters of this setting. The second one, a young girl, is running around the library wearing neon shoes that light up with every step. She has pigtails and is assumed to be the daughter of the older man previously described. The third person, an Asian woman who is sitting all alone in a booth on her computer, is drinking her mug that states "Keep Calm and Carry On" written across one side. Finally, the forth person, also a woman, most likely of Hispanic descent, is on her cell phone, despite being in the library. She is talking rather loud and is visibly annoying those who are attempting to study around her.
3) Some important sounds that are audible in the Nancy Thompson Library are people screaming into their cell phones, and awkward conversations that are being overheard. A couple walked into the library through the Starbucks and was loudly talking about their sex lives, as if the whole world needed to know. Another interesting sound that I overheard is the giggling of a girl sitting in the booth who is looking at cat pictures on her phone.
4) A couple minutes later, a 22 year old African American man walked into the library and tripped, dropping his coffee and spilling it all over the floor. He was visibly mad and started cursing very loudly. Although the Starbucks was no more than four feet away, he still refused to buy another drink out of anger and stormed out of the library.
5) The Nancy Thompson Library smelled like heavy cherry perfume. A woman walked past who obviously put enough on herself for six other people and it made the entire lobby smell strongly of cherry scents.

Exercise 2: Expressive Lighting

Part 1: I chose the woman with the pearl earring by Varmeer because it shows strict cameo lighting. The foreground, which is consisted of her face, is lit with fast falloff lighting, and has a contrasting background of all darkness. The light source is directly to the left of her shining at her forehead, which illuminates her entire face.

Part 2: For my try at the cameo lighting technique, I set up my penguin, Scarfy, and put the light source directly to it's left. This creates a form of fast falloff and can be considered cameo. For the lighting, I used a flashlight pointing from across the room to cover only a section of Scarfy's face. It has the same effect as Vermeer's painting, and has the same contrast between foreground and background.

Lighting Director Question
You are to supervise the lighting of a face cream commercial. The script calls for an ECU of the model’s face. The novice LD suggests using a fast falloff “to accentuate the nice bone structure of the model’s face” Do you agree with the LD? If so, why? If not why?
I do not agree with the novice lighting director, because fast falloff lighting means the subject is much darker, and it will not reveal the so called "bone structure" they mentioned. Fast falloff, upon first look, makes the image harder to see since not all of it is in the light. A better technique would be to use slow falloff because it enlightens the subject much more and the audience is able to view the smaller details shown in the face and body.

Reaction to Diving Bell and The Butterfly
The Diving Bell and The Butterfly left me quite astonished. The movie as a whole is all based out of the perception of a man who is not able to communicate to the people around him, but can still imagine himself doing so. He is snappy enough to create an in depth character that will entrance the audience watching, and is able to personalize himself as a normal individual. It incorporates sight, sound, and motion, all together in the sense that the camera moves as if you are seeing through his eyes. Anything that he hears, you hear at the same volume. The fact that he is completely immobile is terrifying in the sense that it can happen to anyone. I would definitely suggest it to anyone who has the time to watch it.

~ Photographer Bio Assignment ~
The photographer that has inspired me the most is Jerry Uelsmann. Uelsmann, who is an American photographer born in Detroit, Michigan, is mostly known for his intuitive and psychedelic works. He is also known for his darkroom art, which includes very heavy darkness and contrast. Because of his vast variety of photos, Uelsmann has an archive of over hundred of photo negatives that he has captured over the years.
I have always looked up to Jerry Uelsmann because of his idea that through photography he could exist outside of himself. He has been quoted that with photography he wants to "live in a world captured through the lens." Many of Uelsmann's works all have a very forward meaning behind them, showing every side to the spectrum of reality. In the following photo, which is my personal favorite, there are lips at the base of a dense forest, meaning that nature has it's own way of speaking to those around it.

First Blog Post!
The prognosis of movement has been one of the most important ideals created in the entertainment industry, especially through film. Recently, in the newer forms of media, directors have incorporated movement through special effects such as those in the blockbuster 2012. Each individual form of moving, whether done by an actor, or by an object in the background, that was captured by the camera, has to integrate entrancing points that will draw in an audience that will never forget the scene they are watching.
